Don't Forget to Live Outside of Your Notes

By Ellie Drabnis on February 24, 2017

Whether you’re still an undergraduate student or a graduate student, no part of higher education is easy. Speaking of education, no two people come to understand the same concept in the same exact way; our differences of character, personality and the like bleed over into our differences in the way we learn.

And, tough as that is, it’s harder on us if all we do is drown under piles and piles of notes and books based on our chosen field of studying. What I’m saying is, don’t forget to live outside of your notes.

By that, I mean give yourself some breathing room. In other words, take care of yourself by taking a break here and there.

That might almost sound like a parent or older sibling lecturing you, but it isn’t. Don’t take the break for anyone but yourself. Now, your break doesn’t have to be some crazy vacation for a weekend spending ridiculous amounts of money. No. Chances are since you’re a higher education student, you probably don’t have the money to splurge on trips out of the blue.

Treat yourself by taking a nap. It sounds corny, but really, it could help. Taking 90-minute naps is ideal, but there’s nothing wrong with a 20-minute nap here or there. And, I speak from experience when I say that we college-aged kiddos do not get the sleep we should. So, napping does help make up for lack of sleep through the night.

Also, do not forget the importance of staying hydrated, especially all you caffeine addicts out there. I would describe coffee as my life-blood and well, therefore I need to drink even more water. And, fun fact: coffee isn’t the only caffeinated beverage out there; there are plenty of teas with caffeine and some people forget that certain soft drinks have caffeine in them as well. Either way, for every cup of your chosen caffeinated beverage, you should drink one cup of water to make up for the diuretic effect. Your body will thank you afterward.

No matter how you take your coffee or tea, all that caffeine means you’ve got to drink more water.

Once your workload has lessened, don’t forget to spend some time with your friends. Now, you don’t need to get together with all of your friends. Even just an easy-going in-dorm movie night with your roomie or another close friend can suffice.

Either way, let each other know that you’re not alone in the struggles of higher education, and if either of you needs to let off some steam about all the work and difficulties you’ve endured up to this point, you can both do so knowing that you’ll both keep the discussions in confidence.

No matter your majors of study, or if you’re an undergrad or graduate student, please don’t forget to live outside of your notes and take care of yourselves and each other!

Have at least one friend you can confide in and be each other’s rocks.
